Dodgers Could Recall Former Top Prospect This Weekend for Coverage
Dodgers' Options for Coverage
The Dodgers may need some coverage this weekend and could potentially recall former top prospect Keibert Ruiz. They recalled Ruiz, the organization's top prospect, before Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cubs.
The Dodgers sent RHP Ricky Vanasco to the Tigers for cash considerations to clear a 40-man roster spot for Ruiz. Los Angeles has a full 40-man roster and needed to make a move to add Ruiz.
Ruiz's Return
Ruiz, 23, is a switch-hitting catcher who was once considered one of the best prospects in baseball. He has struggled in the majors this season, hitting just .193 with one home run and five RBIs in 33 games.
However, Ruiz has been hot in Triple-A this season, hitting .333 with three home runs and 15 RBIs in 21 games. He is also a strong defensive catcher, with a .992 fielding percentage this season.
Will the Dodgers Recall Ruiz?
It's unclear if the Dodgers will actually recall Ruiz this weekend. They may prefer to wait until after the All-Star break to give him more time to get acclimated to the majors.
However, the Dodgers have a number of injuries in their outfield, with Mookie Betts, Cody Bellinger, and AJ Pollock all on the injured list. Ruiz could provide some much-needed depth in the outfield, as well as behind the plate.
