SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers selected Dee Winters with the sixth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and the rookie linebacker is already making a strong impression at training camp.
Winters, who played collegiately at Texas Christian University, has been praised by 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan for his football IQ and athleticism.
"Dee is a very smart player," Shanahan said. "He's got a great understanding of the game and he's very athletic. He's a guy who can make plays all over the field."
Winters has been working closely with All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner, who has been mentoring the rookie.
"Fred has been a great help to me," Winters said. "He's taught me a lot about the game and how to be a professional. I'm very grateful to have him as a mentor."
With the 49ers set to open the 2024 NFL preseason against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday, Winters is expected to see significant playing time. He's a player to watch as the Niners look to make a deep playoff run this season.
