8.7% Increase for Millions of Americans

Approximately 70 million Americans will see an 87 increase in their Social Security benefits in 2023. This includes Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who receive payments due to disability or blindness. In 2022, 85% of SSI recipients benefited from this increase.

Cost of Living Adjustments

The increase is tied to inflation and the rising cost of living. The Social Security Administration (SSA) determined that the 2023 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will increase the average monthly Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefit for a disabled worker by 87.

Substantial Gainful Activity

For individuals with disabilities other than blindness, the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) amount has also been adjusted to $1,470 per month in 2023. SGA is a measure of a person's ability to work and earn income while receiving disability benefits.
